Interview with Hilary Swank

The Boys Don't cry star tells us what it takes to be a man......

Hilary Swank at the age of 25, she has transformed herself to  Teena Brandon in Boys don't cry
The true-crime drama traces the life and tragic death of a young woman who passes herself off as a boy.  The role won Swank the Best Actress
prize at the Golden Globe Award, and now she's up for an Oscar.

Q: This is an extraordinarily powerful story.  Were you aware of that when you started working on this role?
Hilary Swank: It's a story that provokes a lot of different feelings in a lot of different people.  That's why Teena is dead

Q: Teena Brandon was a girl who felt she really was a boy.  How did you come to psychologically embody the character?
Hilary Swank: I related to the deeper issue of someone pursuing their dream and wanting to be accepted and wanting to be loved.  I learned so much about my self and so much about humanity, but the most important thing I learned is that we're all the SAME.

: Teena Brandon

Q: You changed absolutely everything about yourself for this part, including your voice.
Hilary Swank: I couldn't hire a voice coach, so I had my cousin Billy talk into a type for an hour, and  it worked.

Q: What's involved in becoming a guy?
Hilary Swank:  Most people would think that when you're trying to become a boy, you'd want to beef up a little bit in weight.  But for me, it was losing weight.  When I looked in the mirror to see what could I bring out in myself that looked the most masculine, it was my jawbone.  The structure of my face can be  really strong, so I thought I should lose weight so my cheeks sink in.

Q: How long did it take to turn yourself into a man?
Hilary Swank: There was definitely a moment when it clicked and became easy, but the first two weeks was choosing what walk I wanted to use.  Then I got my look down in the mirror.  Altogether, the transformation took three weeks.

Q: You had to bind yourself to achieve that boyish look.
Hilary Swank:  (Looking down at her chest) I'm a girl, a full out girl.  I got used to do it but the and part was breathing.  I always sounded like I was out of breath.  It probably helped my performance.  And I'm not flat.  I'm a C cup.....
